To survive in Minecraft, you have to know the basics. The one thing you have to do is survive. Pretty simple right? Wrong! Zombies, skeletons, spiders and much more are working to keep you from doing just that! The few basic things you need are: wood, shelter, food and experience (not exp., just knowledge of what to do, although exp. does help). To get wood, all you have to do is punch a tree. A block of wood will appear and go into your hotbar (or inventory). The first things you should do are:
1. Find/make shelter: this is moderately easy. Just enclose yourself in anywhere well lit and your good for the night. Don't worry about how it looks, you can improve later.
2. Get wood: this is very easy. Just go up to a tree and click (tap if using pocket edition) on it.
3. Make crafting table: just go to your inventory (E key) (for pocket edition, hit the "..." button by your hotbar and click on the crafting table on the far left) and put your wood in one of the four boxes at the top. It will turn into 4 wood planks. Then, put all four wood planks to fill up the four boxes and you will get a crafting table.
4. Make basic tools: this is a bit tricky, but gets much easier after you've played a while and memorized them. To make something on your crafting table, you have to first right-click on it (tap on it in pocket edition) and then place certain blocks in a certain order on the 3x3 grid. The first few tools you want to make are: pickaxe, sword, axe, shovel, and hoe. First, I will show you how to make a sword.

This is the crafting recipe for a wooden sword. To make the sticks for the 3rd ingredient, just put two wooden planks, one above the other, on the crafting grid and it will give you 4 sticks. The next item you should make is a wooden pickaxe.

5. Make cobblestone tools, a furnace and torches: After you make your tools, you should use your pickaxe to mine some stone.
 |

First, use your pickaxe to mine the gray stuff as shown in the picture, which is stone.
This will give you cobblestone. You can either replace the wood in past tool recipes with it to make them better or make a furnace.

This is the crafting recipe for a furnace. Once you put it down and right-click it, you will see two boxes. The bottom one is for fuel and the top is for what you are cooking. For the bottom, you can either put coal (a better but rarer fuel) or any wooden tools and wood (a worse but convenient way to get rid of old tools). For the top, you put anything that can be cooked (e.g. raw chicken, iron ore, etc.). This is how you make torches, a very valuable resource.

In the picture, the black lump is coal. You can also replace it with charcoal, if you don't have any coal. To make charcoal, just cook some wood (from the tree, not planks) and it will give you charcoal.
6. Get food: if you got steps 1-5 done in one Minecraft day, you're doing good. Now, you just have to get some food. There are many ways to get food. The first and most common is killing animals. Even though it seems cruel, cooked meat is one of the best food sources in the game. The second way is farming. Use a hoe to make a land plantable by right-clicking (tapping in pocket edition). Then, irrigate the land by surrounding any side of it with water. Next, plant what you want to grow. The easiest by far to get is seeds. Just destroy some tall grass and it will drop 0-2 wheat seeds. When planted, it will grow into wheat. You can destroy the wheat when it is brownish and ripe. It will give you 1-3 wheat and 1-3 seeds. Wheat itself cannot be eaten, but it is a key ingredient in many advanced foods such as cake. If you need food and have at least three wheat, you can make bread.

This is the crafting recipe for bread. You can also plant melon, carrots, pumpkins and more but I will talk about that in another post about farming. :) The third method for getting food is a bit desperate but affective. Just go up to a tree and destroy the leaves until it drops an apple. It is a bit rare, but in my experience, all the leaves on every 3 trees drop an average of 1-2 apples.
7. make a bed: This may be one of the most important things to do in a new world. A bed will let you sleep the night away in mere seconds, and, if slept in, becomes your spawn point.

If you completed steps 1-7, your ready to take on Minecraft! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial! :D
Bye for now!
